A trip to Slab City

Not knowing exactly what was waiting for me in Slab City, and having an excellent time here in Palm Springs, I decided to drive the 80 miles in Yaris to have a look see. I traveled south along the eastern shore of the Salton Sea until I got to the small town of Niland Ca, turned down Main Street and headed east a short distance to the old military base which is called” Slab City”. The Salton Sea was interesting, it was nice to see a large body of water. In fact, parts of the lake you could not see across and looked like an ocean. What was most enjoyable was watching all the marvelous seabirds. Although I have lived in Hawaii for most of my adult life, and am surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, there are no seabirds such as pelicans or seagulls in the Hawaiian Islands. Well, there is a native Hawaiian seagull, but it is endangered and I have never seen one. When entering Slab City, the first thing one sees is” Solvation Mountain”, it is a naturally occurring hill that has been turned into a religious shrine. Upon arrival it doesn’t take long to realize that slab city is in no way similar to Quartzsite. Whereas in Quartzsite, the surrounding area in the desert where people were boondocking was perfectly maintained. In fact, you couldn’t even find a scrap of paper on the desert floor, everyone who boondocks at Quartzsite in the desert is there temporarily, and in the summertime it’s as if no one had ever been there. Whereas in Slab City, there are some people who stay there
